Mixed feeling on this - The Exonerated

Obviously, it's horrendous to be wrongfully convicted of a crime you didn't commit and every effort to should be made to allow technology to free these people. So, when reading this story, my heart went out to these men. It also got me thinking about the whole idea of The Innocence Project and liberal media bias. Some thoughts:

1) what about survivors and secondary survivors of violet crime? They'll never be free either and no one really thinks about these things.

2)If the Innocence Project is so concerned these people have no jobs, no money, not even a suit, why don't they raise money and provide that to the very people they manage to free? Why, there's even a "donate" link to click at the IP site. Surely, the lawyers can't be pocketing all of that money - nah....!

3) There's a HUGE media push on the story of DNA clearing wrongfully convicted folks to the point where there's a mighty slant. What about all the cases where the statute of limitations has run out, DNA is found and tested and we CANNOT prosecute those who have indeed been guilty of crimes? That's a shame. I know women who've gotten "the phone call"; their rapist is found but cannot be prosecuted due to statute. Dammit.

4) To that point, only 17 men were cleared by DNA in Dallas County since 2001. The media would have us think this is some great epidemic and millions of people are wiling away time, innocent, in jail cells. This number, while not insignificant (not even one innocent person should be behind bars), is very miniscule. As a matter of fact, only 216 people total have been freed by the work of The Innocence Project. I daresay there are hundreds, thousands, millions of guilty roaming who will never be caught.

Thoughts? Comments? Tell me I'm being an ass - because I'm just looking at the duller side of an extraordinarily shiny coin.

Liz,

I am in total agreement with you- the wrongly convicted while unjust is minor in comparrison to the guilty walking free. I wish that more states would not have a statute of limitations on rape.
