Not such a happy anniversary....

I meant to blog this yesterday, but was working hard. Two years ago September 8, I received the letter that would (again) change my life. But surprisingly enough, I was not headed to the East End, and I got a call from my beloved sorority sister, Kris Dodd, who has seen her own very serious brand of tragedy and yet she remains the most warm, beautiful, happy and loving soul ever. Seems she has a South African friend who had seen the story of my attack and wanted very much to pass on a message to me.

I had not spoken with Kris in a few months, as friends are wont to do with busy lives - Kris is an amazing career woman and single mom - but she kept hearing from her friend, who had an urgency about his message. It seems the quote is a very poignant South African saying which helps people going through hardship and the irony of the date was not lost on me. She said that he wanted to tell me the following:

"In life, pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional."

No truer words have been spoken. I dedicate this post to Kris, in honor of the baby boy she lost to the hands of drug runners in Venezuela one terrible June day. Much love to you, Kris, Martin and Kelly! xoxo Liz

Liz,

What an awesome quote! Its message is basically the same as another quote, which says in effect, "Life is 10% what happens to you, and 90% how you react to it"!
