Huh? I mean, what? Could be sickest, saddest story of the week.

You can read the whole shooting match here, but allow me to point out the following:

1) am I reading this incorrectly? My blood is boiling, but does it not say that while the children are doing better, feeling safe and secure, "Permanent custody of the three siblings was given to John and Margie Cantrell. This week, prosecutors in California charged John Cantrell with sexually assaulting a child in the state 18 years ago. Margie Cantrell said her husband is innocent." Are these kids now being abused by their "father" in addition to what happened? And the defense is using it to get the original perps off? Did this happen after the horrific events of the forced "sex shows"?

2) "The Rev. Tim Letsch is opening a church in the yellow-plastered building where the children were abused. He acknowledges that building a congregation might be difficult because of the stigma attached to the property.

'You got to decide whether you're willing to forgive those kind of things,' Letsch said. "It's a hard deal. Especially for a spiritual person to walk in and say, 'This happened here.'" Letsch? Letch? Puhleeze.

Seriously, when can we decide to stop leaning on religion, dogma and forgiveness and realize what was done to this kids was Godless and FUBAR? It's a hard deal for anyone to accept - the spiritual are no more special. Children are gifts from God and why in hell do extreme Christians believe they can make it all better? Have you ever noticed that in order to seek Parole, all a violent criminal needs to do is convince the Board he is born again? Come on. I pray every day - doesn't make me blind as fuck (oops, sorry about that).

3) Someone enlighten us: what does it take to get a day care license?

Oh, Liz, have I mentioned I adore you? At least I know I'm not the only one with a mouth like a sailor.

First, though, what makes you think they had a daycare license? Growing up I was watched after school by a neighbor who also watched about eight other kids. She didn't have a license. Nothing untoward happened, but what if it had? And in such a small town... it might not have crossed people's minds to ask for one.

Secondly, I hate bible-thumpers. Oh I'm sorry, that wasn't very God-like. Correction: I really, really, really don't like them.

The one bright spot in all this - two convictions in five minutes. Awesome.

Liz,

Born again convicts infuriate me. I'm with you- I pray every day too.. I go to church every week and pray every day too. But I honestly don't believe violent offenders, especially sex offenders can be rehabiliated- Jesus or not. Perhaps it's the bitterness in me, but I just don't buy into that crock of bullshit.

Many years ago, during the Robert Chambers trial, the now Pastor of my Parish who was a former teacher and good family friend of Mr. Preppie murderer was whom Chambers was released custody to as a condition of his bail. How he made bail on a murder charge, I will never understand.

Anyways, my priest once he was released, was interviewed by Connie Chung on CNN at the time, and was commenting about he has shown remorse, etc.

When the drug bust with Chambers errupted last fall, I couldn't resist asking my priest, as my contempt for scum like Chambers just enrages me, So Monsignor, what do you think of him now?

He was white as a sheet.
