While this story is certainly terrific for Patrick Waller and his family as he is, no doubt, innocent and now free, two things stood out in sharp relief to me. As you read the article, did you notice that...
1) the fact that "the woman was sexually assaulted" by multiple men is all but buried in the article, like an afterthought. As a matter of fact, I don't even think there was a conviction on this count. Sorry, but I feel that part is worse than the kidnapping and robbery. I mean, after all, how else would they have the DNA that freed Waller in a databank?
2)One of the true perps confessed. To a Grand Jury. And guess what? The statute of limitations has run out.
For shame, Texas. Find a way to bring these folks to justice. Imagine how this woman feels now. I hope Craig Watkins, the new DA in Dallas County, can spend some energy on convictions and not just grabbing media headlines with the Innocence Project. I am sure he will.
